Laramie (Wyoming), August 10th, 2020 — Engineering Design Group, LLC announces development of secure remote monitoring products, a web-based client portal, and system integrations for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Data transmission from sensor to the cloud starts with an ARM Cortex R4 processor which sends data to EDG’s client portal via 802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) or LTE (Cat M1/Cat NB1/EGPRS). Global cellular connectivity is provided with an onboard SIM.
The EDG client portal provides a dashboard where customers can access data from sensors connected to arrays of their EDG systems. Sensor interfaces include I2C, SMBus, UART, and SPI, and sit alongside general purpose I/O to support a wide array of applications.
Secure data transmissions are provided through a mature third party platform and OS which provide remotely deployed security updates to the product for the lifetime of the customer service agreement with EDG.
In conjunction with the controllers, EDG will be releasing a smart battery charger with solar panel support enabling stand-alone data monitoring solutions.
EDG’s secure remote integrations can be optimized for industries such as renewable energy, natural gas, mining, and manufacturing with common applications including predictive maintenance, remote control and monitoring, asset management, and auto-replenishment. All About Fiducials
It’s important that the engineer or CADer who is laying out a PCB understands not just why fiducials are needed, but more specifically how fiducials aid stencil positioning and part placement during the surface-mount assembly process. A good understanding of fiducials will ensure that the PCB is designed with the correct number of fiducials, that they are properly sized, and that they are placed in optimal locations for the contract manufacturer. This attention to process during the design cycle will help eliminate errors during manufacturing.

What is a Fiducial?
Fiducials are round pad markers that are placed on the PCB during the design process and are used during surface-mount assembly to aid stencil positioning and to ensure that the pick and place machine is using consistent reference points while positioning parts. A fiducial is a “no BOM” component, which means they are added to the PCB as as a component, but do not appear on the bill of materials because no component is soldered to the pad of the fiducial.
How are they used?
Fiducials are used early in the manufacturing process before any parts are soldered to the PCB.
When creating a fiducial, make sure it has an aperture on the paste layer. During stencil placement, the aperture is used to make sure the stencil is correctly aligned, but also to ensure that the stencil is placed with the correct orientation prior to solder paste application. Without having fiducials apertures on the stencil, there would be no way to align the stencil, as the stencil’s only apertures would be for components where solder paste is applied.
Once the solder paste has been applied to the component pads and the stencil is removed, the pick and place machine utilizes the locations of the fiducials to reference the coordinates for each part. With the fiducials acting as consistent reference points, the machine can adjust the PCB’s position under the pick and place nozzle, ensuring that each part is placed at the correct position.
Sizing
While every contract manufacture may have a slightly different sizing requirement, the golden standard seems to be a fiducial that has a 1mm diameter pad, with solder mask backed off from the center by 1mm in each direction, resulting in a 2mm solder mask circle.
The mask is backed off away from the pad to expose the rough appearance of the inner PCB material, which results in more contrast against the gold pad than if the mask were directly adjacent to to the pad. This contrast helps the machine detect the fiducial pad without discrepancy.
Quantity
While two fiducials will create an angle to verify orientation of a PCB, two fiducials per PCB are not enough. A design with parts on both sides of the board and only two fiducials can result in the PCB being inserted into the machine upside-down. In this case, the stencil would correctly align with the two fiducials, but solder paste would be applied in the wrong locations as the stencil apertures are intended for applying paste to the other side of the PCB. Four fiducials placed symmetrically with respect to each other can cause the same issue, but could also result in an incorrect rotation of the stencil, leading to invalid solder paste application.
A quantity of three fiducials is the perfect number to eliminate accidental misplacement of the stencil with respect to the PCB.
Locations
Generally, fiducials are placed on the frame or rail edges of a PCB, which are held by the pick and place machine as the board is rolled down the conveyor belt. The fiducials should be placed such that they are not blocked by the machine where it holds onto the rails. Similarly, they should be placed with sufficient clearance from the frame or rail edges, and away from any mounting holes, pads, traces, or silk screen which may be nearby.
The fiducials should be positioned such that the intersecting line between a pair of fiducials along one edge are parallel or at a right angle to the PCB edge. (Or for the case of non-square boards, parallel or right angle to the direction the PCB will travel through the pick and place machine). When possible, the distance between a pair of fiducials measured along one side of the PCB should be different from the distance between the pair of fiducials measured along the length which is perpendicular to the first pair.
Fiducials should be placed on the top and bottom of the PCB so that the bottom-side fiducials are directly across from the top-side fiducials. This in conjunction with positioning the fiducial pairs at different distances will help catch a PCB which has been inserted into the machine upside-down. To eliminate any opportunity for offsetting the fiducial pads between the top and bottom sides of the board, I like to draw my fiducial footprints such that one footprint contains the pads, paste apertures, and proper mask backoff for fiducials on both the top and bottom side of the PCB.
To ensure the best locations of your fiducials, talk to your contract manufacturer before ordering the PCB.
Global vs. Local Fiducials
The fiducials we’ve described thus far are referred to are “Global Fiducials”. However, there are also similar positioning references known as “Local Fiducials”. On large boards that have components with dense pin grids and tight pin pitches, placing a local fiducial near the corner of the component may help the CM ensure that the part is correctly aligned. These should not be placed without first consulting your CM. On smaller PCBs where global fiducials are relatively near any component, it is unlikely that local fiducials are necessary.

When you are working in tandem with the same contract manufacturer for multiple projects, any special requirements they may have regarding fiducial sizing and positioning will become apparent after working together on your first design. However, fiducial sizing and positioning for one CM may not be convenient for another. When working with a new CM, we recommend contacting them during the PCB layout process to give them an opportunity to provide any feedback on your design.

How to Select a Connector
Engineers have a love/hate relationship with connectors. With so many varieties and manufacturers to choose from, it’s not easy to make a selection when you’re designing a new product. We’ve put together this rough guide to help you choose a connector series.

Is the connector a sole-source series?
A sole-source part is a part that it is only available through one manufacturer. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but do your research. Check the electronics distribution networks to make sure the part you’ve selected is stockpiled in reasonable quantities. You don’t want to hold up a shipment to your customers because of limited part availability.
Also be wary of how recently the connector series came to market. A connector that has been around longer has had time to be adopted by an industry, and is less likely to be discontinued. Many connectors are developed for specific industry applications, but knowing that a series is widely used will give you confidence that you can depend on it for years to come.
Signal Integrity and Impedance Matching
Does your design include differential pairs or single-ended signals that must be impedance-controlled? If so, you’ll want a connector with pins that are matched to the impedance of your signals. Each discontinuity along your signal transmission will degrade signal quality, and a connector already presents a discontinuity where it transitions from connector to cable. Optimize your signal quality by ensuring the connector series includes pins which are matched to the desired impedance of your signals. Connectors designed to support differential pairs often include nearby ground pins to provide a uniform and continuous ground path adjacent to the signal for the distance that it travels through the connector.
Current Capacity
The current carrying capacity of a connector’s mated pair depends on the headers installed on the PCB at both ends of the cable, the cable housing, the wire, and the wire crimps at each end. Will the voltage drop across the cable length affect your application? If you’re supplying power across the connector, does the per-pin current capacity meet the load at the other end?
Genderless Connectors
There are a number of genderless connector series on the market. With no specific connector intended to be the plug or receptacle, there is no way to accidentally design a PCB for the wrong mating connector. (While this is true, don’t forget to review the component’s orientation on the PCB!)
Another benefit of genderless connectors is that you only need to order and stock one model number — not two.
Latching, Locking, and High Retention Connectors
Connectors with a latching/locking feature usually have a clip on the wire housing or the header. When the cable plug is inserted into the header, it will lock into place and maintain connectivity under demanding environmental conditions.
As an alternative to latching or locking connectors, some connectors are built with higher degrees of retention. The higher the retention, the less likely the cable will become disconnected once the product is in the field.
Surface-Mount, Through-Hole, or Both?
Surface-mount connectors are a great way to save valuable routing space on a PCB. But they come at the expense of being placed with a pick and place machine. If the rest of the devices on your PCB are soldered by hand, a through-hole connector might be the better way to go. Some connector series offer only surface-mount or through-hole connector varieties — but not both. If you can’t make a choice, ask yourself if there’s ever the possibility of your board needing to interface with components that are solely surface-mount or solely-through-hole. A connector series which includes headers of both varieties will provide maximum flexibility for the lifetime of your product family.
Contact Material
While different conductive materials have varying levels of resistance and corrosiveness, it’s more likely that you’ll need to consider the contact material’s thermal properties and gold plating thickness when selecting a connector.
Lead-free solder melts at a higher temperature than leaded solder, which means the connector’s contact must be able to withstand these temperatures. Manufacturers will generally indicate whether or not the product is RoHS compliant, which is indicative of its contacts supporting lead-free solder.
For gold contacts, manufacturers will often offer connector variations with different thicknesses of gold plating. Generally speaking, the more gold on a contact the more connection cycles the contact will permit. Ask yourself: Will the end user be regularly interfacing with the connector? Or is the connector rarely used and fully contained within an enclosure?
Mating Connectors
It’s easy to have tunnel vision when you’re designing a board, and to only see the space you are working with. Don’t forget that for every connector, there’s another connector that must mate to it. Some connector series have small headers that take up little space on the PCB, but larger mating connectors that plug into (or around) the headers. If a header is placed too close to adjacent components on the PCB, the nearby components may interfere with the mating connector and prevent insertion. Latching connectors with large shrouds are usually susceptible to this issue — Watch out for them!
Stand-off Height
Some series of connectors are built specifically for use with stackable form factors, or more generally for mating one PCB with another. When selecting a connector for stackable PCBs, review it carefully to determine that the available combinations of your connector and its mate are available at the required surface-to-surface stacking heights. If there are any tall components on your PCB (transformers, heatsinks, or modules), verify that the mating height of the connector series will provide sufficient clearance for your parts.
Pin Pitch
Be conscious of the pin pitch when selecting a surface mount connector. A small connector might sound like a space-saving opportunity, but this could come at the expense of pins that are tightly packed into a small area. Make sure the pad-to-pad clearance of the connector isn’t so tight that it will prevent the PCB manufacturer from meeting spec — or your PCB cost will increase. Similarly, a tight pin pitch isn’t worth it if your CM is spending precious man hours removing shorts from the pins.
I’ve seen cases where a common pin pitch allows one PCB footprint to support multiple series of connectors. This kind of scenario can allow for future flexibility as well as product customization.
Connector Length
If a PCB has a warped surface, surface mount connectors of longer length are more likely to experience solder issues than their shorter counterparts. Any slight bow or twist in the PCB, and a long connector may come out of the pick-and-place machine with insufficiently soldered pins that will require touch-up.
Are pre-assembled cables available for the connector series?
Pre-assembled cables are not for everyone. But in some applications, they can be a convenient way to speed up the assembly process, reducing the overall assembly time and associated costs. Connector manufacturers such as Molex, Samtec, and TE Connectivity each offer off-the-shelf cable assemblies.

There are many facets to connector selection, and each engineer will have their success stories and probably at least one or two horror stories. What is most important to remember is that a connector series which appears to solves your biggest issue today may create unexpected problems tomorrow. Overlooking any detail may adversely affect the electrical properties of your design, but could also impact procurement, the assembly process, and even your customer.

In Wyoming, creating a technology culture feels like a chicken-or-egg problem. Will the people plant their roots here without businesses in place to hire them? Will the businesses invest in real estate without a sufficient supply of workers to fill the jobs? Will towns emphasize the arts to create an environment where both people and businesses can thrive?
We don’t know. But we believe the future of technology in Wyoming is bright.
Wyoming has always been a state to lead the nation. We were the first state to give women the right to vote, and the first state to have women serve on a jury. We’re home to the first National Park and the nation’s first National Monument. Among industries, we’ve been a leader in mining coal and raising livestock. Among other resources, we’re known for mining petroleum and natural gas, and more recently harvesting wind energy. In a large state with so many resources, it’s no surprise that our economy has been driven by the minerals that lie within our border.
How does this relate to technology?
In some ways, it doesn’t. Wyoming’s history of mining minerals made us known for our boom and bust economy. Miners arrived to Wyoming as our minerals were in demand, and they fled as demand declined. Unlike mining, modern skills that thrive in the tech hubs of the world — programming, engineering, and design — are a foundation to many growing industries that are not boom or bust. Industries such as information technologies, silicon manufacturing, blockchain, IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are unique in that once planted, there’s a good chance that they’ll stay.
There are a lot of moving pieces to creating a healthy ecosystem for high-tech industries. Entrepreneurs, education, business incubators, and engineers are among the more obvious pieces. At the surface it’s easy to see our state’s beautiful landscapes, year-round outdoor activities, low cost of living, and no corporate taxation — and ask, why don’t we have more technology companies here in Wyoming? But a deeper look reminds us that there’s an exodus of youth jumping ship in pursuit of job opportunities.
Talk to most soon-to-be graduates of the University of Wyoming and you’ll hear a common theme. Our students want to stay, but where will they find jobs?
There are few big tech names here already. Perhaps our most notable is the Microsoft Cheyenne Data Center, opened in 2013. There are many smaller technology firms here too, some of which have stood the test of time. Other businesses have been sold — some of which stayed in Wyoming for a while, others of which have been moved off the local map either in pieces or as a whole. But a lot of the names behind the businesses are still here — thinking, creating, and planting in the fertile soil they know well.
Just an hour or two away, the Front Range of Colorado is a technology belt with already established businesses, arts, and an international airport. With elements like these, there’s no question why Colorado’s growth has been explosive in recent the years. But which came first? Certainly the airport and businesses weren’t built before the people arrived.
In Wyoming, paving the way toward a technology-friendly ecosystem feels like a chicken-or-egg problem. Will the people plant their roots here without businesses in place to hire them? Will the businesses invest in real estate without a sufficient supply of workers to fill the jobs? Will towns emphasize the arts to create an environment where both people and businesses can thrive?
We don’t know. But we believe the future of technology in Wyoming is bright. And we’re glad to be here as a part of it.
